hiko-A-mon

1115 Herr Lane Louisville, KY 40222

It’s our tradition to go out for sushi on the anniversary of our first date. This past weekend, we celebrated 5 years at hiko-A-mon. We enjoyed drinks (Dragon Punch and Sapporo beer) in a large dark wood booth. Nearby there are rooms for private parties, one which has a low table where you take off your shoes and sit on the floor. You can dress up or down, which I always appreciate, and there are two TVs in the corner in case there’s a game on that you just can’t miss.

We started with our usuals: salad with ginger dressing (small hiko-A-mon salad) and  the seaweed salad. Both great portion sizes and quality for the cost.

We tried the Surf and Turf roll for the first time- spicy crab inside, topped with filet mignon. The flavors compliment each other so well, you have to try it! This roll is one of the most expensive for $13 which actually isn’t bad in comparison to some other sushi restaurants.

The Made in Japan roll, which was recommended by our waitress, was delicious! Cream cheese, shrimp tempura, and cucumber inside and topped with spicy crab, tuna, and super white tuna; need I say more? I love sushi rolls with spicy mayo or eel sauce, and even more when they’re together on the same roll. This roll was also a more expensive one for $13.

We have never had super white tuna so we wanted to try nigiri ($2.50 each). It was so fresh!

Hiko-A-mon has many other menu options if sushi isn’t you’re thing. They also serve rice and noodle dishes, and land, sea, vegetable, or combination entrees.

The service was great here! We had a reservation for 7 pm on a Saturday night and were seated promptly upon arriving. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful, providing recommendations when I asked. Our drinks then salads were quickly served before we even decided which rolls we wanted. Our sushi rolls even came out soon after ordering; even with a good crowd at the restaurant. I felt like we took our time and were still in and out in one hour.

hiko-A-mon is open Monday-Thursday 11:30-2 pm and 4:30-10 pm; Friday 11:30-2pm and 4:30-11 pm; Saturday 12-11 pm; and Sunday 4-9 pm. Their other location is downtown at 416 W Muhammad Ali Boulevard. Check out their hours and both menus on their website.

Sake Blue

9326 Cedar Center Way Louisville, KY 40291

Sake Blue was the location for our anniversary dinner a couple weeks ago. It’s our tradition to go out for sushi because we had sushi on our first date. I’ve been hearing about Sake Blue since I moved to Louisville but it’s about a half hour outside of downtown so I hadn’t made it there yet. It turned out to be a good location to celebrate!

In addition to our usual seaweed salad, house salad, and miso soup, we started with the Panko Love Cado, which is deep fried avocado and crab drizzled with creamy wasabi and mango sauce. It looks weird but it’s pretty good IF you really like avocado.

We then got two signature rolls- the Las Vegas and the Angry Ex-wife (one of the specials), which was served “on fire” (aka the plate surrounding the sushi roll was set on fire). I couldn’t handle the jalepeno in the Angry Ex-wife, but loved it otherwise. I would definitely recommend the Las Vegas roll- first time having mozzarella in my sushi but it was pretty good.

You can also sit at a grill for a Hibachi dinner. Get vegetable, chicken, steak, salmon, swordfish, lobster tail, scallops, etc!

Check out their menu on their website. Sake Blue is open for lunch Monday-Friday 11:30 am-2:30 pm and dinner 5-10 pm (4:30-11 pm on Fridays); Saturday 11:30 am-11 pm; and Sunday 12 pm-9:30 pm.

Oishii Sushi

2810 Taylorsville Road Louisville, KY 40205

This restaurant is a prime example of why you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Not with an impressive exterior but Oishii Sushi makes up for all with their sushi, service, and price. I walk in with friends visiting from home and the hostess asks if we have reservations. Uh no, should we? The 15-20 minute wait is actually about 5 minutes, which is fine because it takes my boyfriend and me at least double that to just decide which rolls we want. They have quick service bringing out our table’s appetizers, which are soon followed by our sushi rolls. My boyfriend and I shared the Derby roll which was amazing and HUGE, and the Philadelphia roll, my staple regular roll. Our friends ordered the Cardinal roll and Lobster roll, both of which looked awesome and tasted fabulous per their report. I like the price list as well- regular rolls at $3.50-11.95 and special rolls at $7.50-12.95. Oishii Sushi won’t win any awards for romantic ambiance but I’d much rather go for quality sushi at a good price than a trendy restaurant with overpriced rolls. Definitely one of my favorite sushi places in Louisville thus far!
